Support and Deductions Restaurants Often Miss in Their Energy Bill

Klimatklivet (the Climate Step initiative), municipal energy advisory services, and energy audits – for restaurants, several free or subsidised opportunities exist that are rarely utilised. Here are the ones we most often see being missed.

Money Left on the Table

Unlike an SNI-classified energy-intensive industry, the restaurant sector is not eligible for energy tax refunds (these primarily apply to manufacturing, agriculture, and data centres). However, there is support and free resources available to businesses regardless of the industry – and these are often overlooked.

Important to Know First

The ROT, RUT, and “green deduction” for solar panels only apply to private individuals. If you operate your restaurant through a limited company (aktiebolag), trading partnership (handelsbolag), or sole proprietorship (enskild firma), you cannot use these tax reductions – this is one of the most common misconceptions when planning investments.

Support and Resources to Check

  • Klimatklivet (Swedish Environmental Protection Agency). Investment support for measures that reduce emissions – for example, charging infrastructure, switching to more energy-efficient kitchen equipment, or energy recovery. Applications are submitted during open application periods and before the investment begins.
  • Municipal energy and climate advisors. Free, independent advice available in almost all municipalities – many are unaware of this service.
  • Energy audit. Large companies are required to conduct these according to the EKL (Energy Efficiency Directive); smaller businesses can voluntarily commission an audit. The results pinpoint where money is actually being lost.
  • Geographic reduction of energy tax. Businesses in certain municipalities in northern Sweden automatically receive a reduced energy tax – check that this reduction is visible on your grid fee invoice.

What You Can Do First Yourself

  1. Monitor Klimatklivet's application periods on the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency's website.
  2. Book a free meeting with your municipality's energy and climate advisor.
  3. Verify that any geographic reduction of energy tax is applied to your invoice.
